Brief description
Throughout the prehistoric world snakes were revered, respected, and a part of the ecstatic festivals
that characterized the first religious inklings of man. Subsequently, snakes have played a vital role in
all religious traditions, where they are portrayed either as the ultimate force of salvation and wisdom,
or as death and ignorance, and sometimes as both. The Cosmic Serpent is the great rainbow bridge
between worlds. In folklore it is said to have a jewel at its crown and possess magical treasures.
In the prefigurative universe it was a serpent, be it the Greek Python or Vedic Vrtra, who guarded the
pristine innocence of the Uncreate. This also appears so in Egypt, where serpents were considered
to be among the first to witness Ra (the Sun) rising above the firmament. |
